Mieszko I Piast (945-992) was the first historical ruler of Poland. He is described as founder of Kingdom of Poland. He was father of 1st Polish King - Bolesław the Brave.
Mieszko was baptized in 966 year and it was the dawn of Christianity in Poland. All pagan temples were destroyed and churches were built.
He married Dobrava - princess from Přemyslid dynasty of Bohemia (Czech) - and it, combined with his baptism, put Poland within sphere of western civilization.
All his ancestors are legendary, but Polish historians (e.g. Paweł Jasienica) claim that ancestors mentioned in Chronicle of Gallus Anonymus existed.
Mieszko was buried at the Poznań Cathedral. More about Mieszko I.
